The O'Connell Monument with bullet holes sustained in the 1916 Easter uprising; built in 1866-1883, but unveiled 1882 bronze, on a granite plinth and limestone base. In the front centre, the "Maid of Erin" (representing Ireland) points up at O'Connell, the liberator. The Easter Rising of 1916, when Irish republicans seized the General Post Office (GPO) and proclaimed the Irish Republic, led to O'Connell street's bombardment for a number of days.
